Calving Season

It's time to have some more babies.  While Josh and I are completely and unquestionably done having babies, we have mama cows that have a job to do at this time of the year.  This is a fun time for us because we get to see new life on the farm.  It can also be a tenuous time here on the farm.  Some of the mama cows have not had calves before so they may have a tough delivery.  We keep a watchful eye over them and most of the time everything goes well.  This little guy is one of the newest members of the family.

His mama let me get pretty close to him to take a picture.  She's a pretty laid back mama.  I'll have to get a picture of the mama we call White Face.  She is not a laid back mama at all and will charge you if she feels threatened in the least.  But back to this little guy's mama, there she is standing next to the hay ring with one eye on lunch and one eye on the crazy two legged beast getting a picture of her baby.

The guy in between them is one of last year's steers.  He will be fed out and butchered in the coming months.  The little guy is a steer now, too (since Jonathon and Josh got a hold to him and banded him).  He will either be sold to someone for meat or taken to auction.  If you have any interest in purchasing meat, let me know and we'll work something out.
